Phosphate Rich Organic Manure (PROM)

You are here:

Production of Phosphate Rich Organic Manure (PROM): The value-added product from IRESA (Biogas + BAIF Slurry Filter) – is made by combining organic slurry cake with Rock Phosphate and adding microbial additives such as Phosphate Soluble Bacteria (PSB).  Phosphorus is one of the most important nutrients for plant growth along with nitrogen and potash. PROM is a slow-release organic product of phosphate and has already been recognized as a good replacement/equivalent for chemical Phosphate fertilizers by the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizer. The experiments and trials on Bio-manure in the form of vermicomposting, Phosphate Rich Organic Manure (PROM), etc. have been conducted by BAIF and MPKV Rahuri and it is found that NPK the Phosphate content of PROM is at 12%. This is about 11% more Phosphate than that of vermicomposting. The experiments also indicated that PROM is equivalent to Single Super Phosphate (SSP) in terms of nutrient availability in soil. Up to 80% of Phosphates from SSP and DAP get fixed in the soil and are not available to plants. Whereas since PROM contains organic matter, most of the phosphates are available to the soil reducing wastage of key resources. Due to the organic nature of PROM, the soil health of farms will slowly improve in terms of the structure, moisture-retaining capabilities, and microbial count thus leaving residues of Phosphate in the soil. This reduces the drudgery and cost for farmers as the need to put Phosphate rich chemical fertilizer for the second crop will reduce.

On the other hand, the Manufacture of synthetic phosphate fertilizers demands the production of elemental phosphorus or phosphoric acid from phosphate rock, which, by itself, is an energy-intensive process. Thus, developing an alternative for chemical phosphate fertilizers, which are less ‘energy intensive’ and do not get fixed in the soil but are completely assimilated by plants, becomes attractive in these respects.

PROM is a slow-release organic product of phosphate and has already been recognized as a good replacement/equivalent for chemical Phosphate fertilizers by the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizer. The experiments and trials on Bio-manure in the form of vermicomposting, Phosphate Rich Organic Manure (PROM), etc. have been conducted by BAIF and it is found that NPK content is 3% more in the PROM manure. The experiments also indicated that PROM is equivalent to Single Super Phosphate (SSP) in nutrient content. Since PROM contains organic matter, the soil health of farms will slowly improve leaving residues of Phosphate in the soil. This reduces the drudgery and cost for farmers as the need to put Phosphate rich chemical fertilizer for the second crop will reduce.
